Something Fishy

I was recently thinking about fish for some reason.  My mind hearkened back to the good ole saying:

You can give a man a fish and feed him for a day, or you can teach a man to fish and give him a reason to sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

As I thought about this profound statement, I thought it might need a little updating for today’s world.  In honor of the season, I have changed that classic saying to the following:

You can teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime, or you can just give him his neighbor’s fish as a tax on productivity and create a socialist utopia.

Of course, the one man still will not know how to fish and will end up becoming a dependent of the socialist utopia.  The man who knows how to fish will end up either hiding his fish or fishing less in order to avoid taxation.  In either case, the quantity of fish available for all will decline because the utopia will have created incentives that tax productivity and reward lethargy.

So, kiddies, if you tax the risk takers, less risk will be taken and the total overall quantity of benefit from the risk will decline.  Risk takers are being threatened with a no-win proposition: if the risk doesn’t pay off they lose and if the risk does pay off they lose by taxation.  By raising taxes on our entrepreneurs that take risks and create jobs, less jobs will be created, less investment will occur and the overall health of our nation will decline.

Just something to think about.  Now get back in your boats and keep drinking!

  1. Dave,
I’d like to comment on your blog, though you probably wont like what I have to say. But first, let me get this out of the way, I don’t believe in social security, I dont believe in Medicade or Medicare, and I also dont believe in socialism.

Now with that out of the way, you need to realize several things, first any service the government provides (state or local) can be viewed as being socialist, roads, hospitals, fire departments, etc. Anything that tax money that gets used for the benefit of the common good and is collectively owned by the people (the state) can be viewed as socialism.

Given the current political climate, I dont believe we are really fighting the right battles. The right wants you to believe that the leftist agenda is socialist and that they will destroy our country with their liberism and our christian values will no longer be tolerated.

The problem is that they are making the arguements on the wrong basis. If you want to call the left socialist then argueing about tax cuts is foolish. The attack should be on the programs that the left wants to establish. I say this because the right has given tax cuts to the wealthy many times in the past eight years and the arguement could be made that they are “redistributing” wealth upwards and are actually worse than socialists.

To be honest, given the spending spree the right has been on in the last 8 years, I think their goal is to bankrupt this country so as we can no longer have social programs, which would be awsome mind you, but is the cowards way out.
